At SEAM Waterford, we are committed to providing cutting-edge technology to support advanced materials research and innovation. We are excited to introduce the Nano Indenter TS77 by Bruker—a revolutionary tool in the field of Nano indentation and materials testing, now available at our facility in Waterford.
What is nano-indentation?
The technique of nano-indentation was developed in the mid-1970s. It is used to measure the mechanical properties such as the elastic modulus and hardness of materials on a nanoscale. It involves pressing a hard, sharp indenter typically made of diamond into the surface of a material with a precisely controlled force or displacement and then measuring the depth of penetration or force exerted. Its ability to provide detailed insights on a small scale makes it indispensable for quality control, research and development in various industries such as electronics, automotive, aerospace, and biomedical engineering.
The Bruker TS77 Nano-indenter
In 2020, SEAM acquired a Bruker TS77 select nano-indenter through a capital equipment fund granted by Enterprise Ireland. It is a state-of-the-art instrument designed for precise measurement of mechanical properties at the nanoscale. This system delivers reliable mechanical and tribological characterization over nanometre-to-micrometre length scales offering quantitative and dynamic nanoindentation, nanoscratch, nanowear, and high-resolution mechanical property mapping of a variety of materials, including thin films, coatings, polymers, metals, and composites. Whether its hardness testing, modulus mapping, or the characterization of thin films and coatings, this Nano indenter is perfectly suited for a wide range of material science applications. Additionally, the efficiency and automation provided by the TS77, with its high-speed scanning and automated testing processes, significantly reduce the time required for data collection. This advanced tool delivers highly accurate and repeatable measurements, providing detailed insights into the mechanical properties
In line with SEAM’s certification with ISO 9001, the Bruker TS77 select nano-indenter is kept up to date with all the calibrations required. In addition, the system is setup to run tests in accordance with the ISO 14577 and ASTM E2546 standards.

Case Study – Nano Indenter
Recently, one of the industrial partners approached SEAM concerning one of their thin-film polymer products. They had noticed variations in the performance of those products and were looking to identify the difference(s) between some samples of the product-of-concern and further understand the cause of the problem.
As a first step, material composition testing of the provided samples was completed to exclude possible composition differences. The results indicated same material composition across all tested samples, good and bad. Next, nano-indentation testing was conducted on the samples as mean to identify mechanical properties differences. Based on the results, the good samples appeared to have a higher hardness value compared to the other bad ones. This indicated probable differences in the material structure and urged further investigations. Flowingly, thermoanalytic testing was conducted on those samples and confirmed the material structure differences and not material composition indicating differences in how the material was processed.
