Re-design of the Impeller and Shaft Section of a Submersible Pumping System
The Challenge
Sulzer Ltd wish to refine and fully explore design concepts without the cost of building full scale prototypes. They also wished to explore the how they could improve the life time of the shaft component.
Why SEAM
SEAM possess the capabilities and specialist equipment that enables companies like Sulzer access to experienced staff and state of art equipment under one roof.
The Solution
SEAM undertook FEA (finite element analysis) on the current design before proceeding on to investigating a number of design options before selecting the most suitable solution to provide improved life time of the shaft component. Validation of the finalised design is currently ongoing at Sulzer. The partnership provided Sulzer with access and expertise to state of art computer simulation software which is greatly more cost effective than having such facilities in house.
The Outcome
The collaboration enabled Sulzer Ltd to make design improvements to the Impeller and Shaft Section of a Submersible Pumping System. This will result in improved pump performance and improved life time of the product.
